直立灌木，稀攀援，少具刺；小枝对生，树皮常脱落。叶对生，全缘或具齿，离基3或5出脉；托叶缺；芽常具鳞片或无鳞片包裹。总状花序，常下部分枝呈聚伞状或圆锥状排列，稀单花；花白色，芳香，筒陀螺状或钟状，贴生于子房上；萼裂片4 (-5)；花瓣4 (-5)，旋转覆瓦状排列；雄蕊13-90，花丝扁平，分离，稀基部联合，花药卵形或长圆形，稀球形；子房下位或半下位，4 (-5) 室，胚珠多颗，悬垂，中轴胎座；花柱 (3) 4 (-5)，合生，稀部分或全部离生，柱头槌形、棒形、匙形或桨形。蒴果4 (-5)，瓣裂，外果皮纸质，内果皮木栓质；种子极多，种皮前端冠以白色流苏，末端延伸成尾或渐尖，胚小，陷入胚乳中。
