花萼贴生至子房顶端，3-5裂（国产种5裂）；花冠钟状，3-5浅裂，有时裂至近基部（国产种5裂过半）；雄蕊与花冠分离，花丝基部常扩大，花药长圆状；子房下位，2-5室，柱头2-5裂，裂片窄。蒴果2-5室，在宿存的花萼以上的顶端部分2-5室背开裂（国产种3室3瓣裂）。种子多数。一年生或多年生草本，少为亚灌木，叶互生，稀对生。花与叶对生，集成疏散的圆锥花序。
